Why Protein First

Written by our Bariatric Nutritionist - Dt.Neetu Bajaj

Bariatric surgery or Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) has a stage wise structured dietary approach which majorly includes four stages. The main aim of designing these stages is to help the patient provide enough hydration and gradually make him adapt to a portion controlled, nutritionally dense and high protein food choices at every meal, while he is in his rapid weight loss phase. This has also been emphasized several times in my book  HEALTHY EATING POST BARIATRIC (WEIGHT LOSS) SURGERY.

Eating protein rich food at every meal will not only ensure and promote recovery and healing post surgery, but will also help you to maximize your weight loss results too.

The human body needs protein to maintain and repair itself, as every single cell, tissues, muscles and organs are largely comprised of protein. In addition to this protein helps the body to perform all the life sustaining activities properly, as all the hormones and enzymes are also made of proteins which help to form blood cells and antibodies that provides protection from infection and illness. Moreover the word protein itself means  FIRST IMPORTANCE and it is the most important macro-nutrient in the bariatric diet (please refer chapter no.9 of my book HEALTHY EATING POST BARIATRIC (WEIGHT LOSS) SURGERY)

Assists in wound healing by building and repairing skin, muscle and major organs, so will help you recover from surgery soon.

Speeds up fat burning and supports your natural metabolism so you can lose weight more quickly.

Supports your lean body muscles, the more muscles you have the higher will be your metabolism and the more fat calories you will burn for energy.

Minimizes hair fall.

Helps to keep your skin, hair, bones and nails healthy.

Provides satiety for a longer duration of time as protein rich meal takes longer time for digestion.

Helps in improving insulin resistance thus keeps a check on blood sugar level too.

As per ACMBS (American Council of Metabolic And Bariatric Surgery), the RDA (Recommended daily allowance) for the macronutrient protein is 1-1.2 gram per kg of ideal body weight (IBW). Post surgery the average women needs approximately 60-80 gms protein and an average man needs approximately 80-100 gram of protein per day to stay healthy and active.

The best sources of protein are:

Animal sources: eggs, chicken, lean cuts of meat, turkey, sea food like fish, oysters, shrimps & lobsters etc., skimmed or low fat milk and its products like cottage cheese, curd or buttermilk.

Plant sources:All types of pulses and lentils like rajma, channa and lobiya etc.

Soy and its products like soy milk, tofu and soy beans.

Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds etc

Whole Grains like amaranth, quinoa, millets and oats etc.

(Refer page no 24, 25 & 36 of the book HEALTHY EATING POST BARIATRIC (WEIGHT LOSS) SURGERY for the amount of protein per serving in different protein rich food groups.)

Immediately after the surgery, when you are in the stage 1 of clear liquid diet for 3 weeks, you are advised by your Bariatric Dietitian to start with Protein supplement powders to be mixed in water /milk, as with reduced gastric pouch it’s hard to fulfill the protein requirements through food sources alone, so it’s really very important to supplement your high protein diet requirements through protein shakes as advised by your bariatric dietitian for minimum 2-3 times a day. And in your  Regular textured diet phase -4 too it’s highly recommended to include protein supplements in the form of shakes or smoothies in your dietary regimen for 2 times a day as they helps you to keep satiate for longer & will boost your energy levels too.

Meal Replacement Shakes or Smoothies (MRP’S)

Consuming a protein rich shake or a smoothie is a great way to meet your daily protein requirement as advised by your Bariatric dietitian, as they are the perfect choice for a nutritionally dense and high protein complete meal that will keep you sated for longer and will also supports your body to derive energy from the stored fat in your body & will spare your lean body muscles for’ the energy release . So it will ignite the metabolism which will further helps you to shed those extra pounds.

How to make a power punch & protein pack smoothie:

Blending up a smoothie in a mixer is always a great way to start up your day or it can be substituted for any meal of your day. It’s a complete protein rich meal in a glass & it’s really very easy to blend in a protein rich smoothie in a mixer. And if done right, packed with vitamins, minerals antioxidants, proteins, healthy fats and so much more & it’s so refreshing energizing & super delicious too.

Believe me how to blend a perfect smoothie is not a rocket science .It can be done in just four easy steps mentioned below:

*Select a base wisely from

Skimmed/low fat milk

Soy milk (unflavoured)

Coconut water

Plain water

Almond milk

*Select a portion of fruit

Adding up a fruit in a smoothie is a great way of adding up vitamins, minerals & heart healthy antioxidants .You only need to add 1-2 small servings of fruit in a smoothie. Can select from any seasonal fruit available like:

*Thicken it up

You can thicken your smoothie by adding various nuts & seeds in it. Can select from the following choices:

Almonds powder

Walnuts powder

Flax seed powder

Sesame seeds powder

Pumpkin seeds powder

Sunflower seeds powder

Chia seeds powder

*Add a protein power boost in it

Adding a whey protein/plant protein/soy protein/egg protein supplement is an awesome means of boosting the protein content of a smoothie & it will make it more filling. You can select from any protein supplement available at the pharmacies or at your bariatric surgery centre too.

(Please refer page no 14 & 15 of my book “healthy eating post bariatric surgery for the thumb rule to select whey protein supplement and also for various other brands of sports nutrition protein supplements)
